Working with children entails a significant duty of care

Working with children entails a significant duty of care, children are young and vulnerable and therefore it is our duty of care to look after and protect them when they are within our care. Conflicts and dilemas that may arise between the duty of care and an individual’s rights may include staff having a difference of opinion over a child, for example one staff member may suspect abuse of a child whereas another may believe there are no signs of abuse, this may lead to conflict between the child’s family or carers as well as other agencies that may need to be involved in the situation. A dilemma within this situation could include not going to social services and the child may continue to be abused or knowing when to break confidentiality and share the information with others.
