We started making cars in 1927 because we believed nobody else was making them strong enough or safe enough for Swedish roads. Along the way we’ve come up with dozens of innovations, some of which have changed the world. And it’s this commitment that drives us forward to the next great Volvo Cars idea.

At Volvo Cars, everything we do starts with people. So our mission to make people’s lives easier, safer and better is something that comes naturally to us. It’s the Volvo way.

Today, we’re still as focused as ever on our three core values: safety, quality and care for the environment.

Protecting what’s important. Making people feel special. And taking pride in helping the world become a better place for all.

This is Volvo
The first mass-produced Volvo car rolled off the production line in Gothenburg in 1927. Since then, Volvo Car Group has delivered a steady stream of Volvo models equipped with world-leading innovations. Today, Volvo is one of the most well-known and respected car brands in the world with sales in about 100 countries.

Volvo Car Group (Volvo Cars) has been under the ownership of the Zhejiang Geely Holding (Geely Holding) of China since 2010. Volvo Cars formed part of the Swedish Volvo Group until 1999, when the company was bought by Ford Motor Company. In 2010, Volvo Cars was acquired by Geely Holding.

The ‘Volvo’ name is owned by Volvo Trademark Holding AB, which is jointly owned by Volvo Cars and Volvo Group.

The company’s corporate and brand strategy “Designed Around You” puts people at the centre and is a foundation and a guide for the business, the products and the corporate culture.

Volvo cars are marketed and sold by regional market companies and national sales companies through approximately 2,300 local dealers in about 100 countries. Most of the dealerships are independent companies. As of December 2016, Volvo Cars had around 31,000 employees around the globe.

Volvo Cars produces premium-segment car models in three versions: Sedans (S60, S90), Versatile estates (V40, V60, V90) and Cross Country vehicles (XC60, XC90).

In 2016, Volvo Cars sold a total of 534,332 cars, the company’s third consecutive year of record sales. Relative to the strength of the brand, Volvo Cars is a small producer, with a global market share of 1–2 percent. The largest market, China, represented some 17 per cent of the total sales volume in 2016, followed by the United States (15%), Sweden (13%), the United Kingdom (9%) and Germany (7%).

For the 2016 financial year, Volvo Car Group recorded an operating profit of 11,014 MSEK (6,620 MSEK in 2015). Revenue over the period amounted to 180,672 MSEK (164,043 MSEK).

Volvo Cars head office, product development, marketing and administration functions are mainly located in Gothenburg, Sweden. Since 2011, Volvo Cars has offices in Shanghai and Chengdu, China. The Volvo Cars China headquarters in Shanghai includes a Technology Centre and functions such as sales and marketing, manufacturing, purchasing, product development and all other supporting functions.

Apart from the main car production plants in Gothenburg (Sweden) and Ghent (Belgium), Volvo Cars has since the 1930s manufactured engines in Skövde (Sweden). Production of body components has been located in Olofström (Sweden) since 1969. The company furthermore operates an assembly plant in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) and a research and development center in Copenhagen (Denmark). Finally, Volvo has design centers in Gothenburg (Sweden), Camarillo (USA) and Shanghai (China).

In the fourth quarter of 2013, Volvo Cars started serial production at its manufacturing plant in Chengdu, China. This plant produces Volvo cars for the Chinese and US markets. A second manufacturing plant in Daqing, China started production in the second half of 2014, while Volvo Cars also has an engine factory in Zhangjiakou, China. In the US, Volvo Cars is building a manufacturing facility in Berkeley County, South Carolina, which will become operational in the second half of 2018.

With the Designed Around You corporate strategy, combined with Volvo Cars’ ambitious expansion plans, the long-term aim is to sell 800,000 cars annually. Part of the growth strategy is to establish China as the company’s second home market.

OUR MISSION
Driving prosperity through transport solutions.

Transport helps combat poverty
Modern logistics is a prerequisite for our economic welfare: transport helps combat poverty.

We contribute to prosperity and make the world a better place.

On the road: our products help ensure that people have food on the table and roads to drive on.

In the city: our products are part of the daily life. They take people to work, collect rubbish and generate power. Volvo Group is developing tomorrow’s public transport solutions.

Off road: we contribute to the extraction of some of the world’s most important raw materials. Volvo Group’s engines, machines and vehicles can be found at mining and construction sites and in the middle of forests.

At sea: whether you are at work on a ship, on holiday in your pleasure boat or need urgent help from the sea rescue services.

OUR VISION
To be the most desired and successful transport solution provider in the world.

We are in a people business
We may do business with other companies, but people make the decisions. Trust and relations are as important as the total offer.

Heart is important. We have branded products and services and it is with these and our representatives that our customers form relations.

In the end, by bringing together the best of everything from the offer to the relationship  – we will become the desired choice.

Our Services
In addition to vehicles and machines, the Volvo Group’s offering includes various types of financing solutions, insurance, rental services, spare parts, preventive maintenance, service agreements, assistance services and IT services. The range and flexibility of our offering means that solutions can be customized for each customer.

Since a large part of the offering within the aftermarket business is linked to the vehicle population, this helps to balance fluctuations in the sales of new products for the Group.

Efficient workshops
Our extensive network of workshops is expanding all the time. Customers have access to skilled service technicians wherever they are. Genuine service maximises uptime and reduces the risk of unplanned workshop visits. Individual service plans for each truck, bus or machine guarantee that the right type of service is carried out exactly when needed.

Products from the Volvo Group are built with genuine parts and they are an integrated part of preventive maintenance and repair contracts.

Service and maintenance agreements
Service contracts give customers easy and convenient truck, bus or machine ownership for a fixed fee. With these contracts customers know exactly when the vehicle or machine is due for service and what the costs will be for maintenance and repairs. This gives them more time to focus on their core business.

Customers can choose from different service contract levels. The basic services included in each contract can be extended with a variety of options, allowing customers to create a solution that exactly suits their needs.

Assistance to keep vehicles in operation
We have various roadside assistance services available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Whenever customers need support they will be connected to a case manager who speaks their own language and who will support them right the way through the situation. If needed, a skilled technician will support them at the roadside. Financial assistance, translation service, truck and trailer repair and rental, driver repatriation and legal assistance can also be included in the service.

Financial services
Volvo Financial Services provides customer financing and leasing, dealer financing, and related fee-based products such as insurance. These products are delivered as part of the Volvo Group integrated total offer, creating value for dealers and customers by providing convenience, speed and solutions tailored to their specific business needs.

Transport information systems
Our different brands offer a range of integrated transport information systems based on the latest digital, wireless communication technologies.

Remote Diagnostics provides truck customers in North America with proactive diagnostic and repair planning assistance.

CareTrack is Volvo CE’s telematics system that gives customers access to a wide range of machine monitoring information designed to save time and money.

Keep costs downOur various driver training programmes optimise driver skills, resulting in reduced fuel consumption, safer driving and reduced impact on the environment. They also improve the operators’ overall performance by getting the most out of their vehicles and machines as well as their drivers.
