The university of California, Berkeley is situated roughly 15 miles from San Francisco in what is known as the Bay Area. The public university, also commonly known as Berkeley or Cal, was founded in 1868.  This university was born out of the state constitution of a university, which would “contribute to the glory and happiness of future generations even more than California’s gold”. Berkeley, its first campus, is the most outstanding public university in the history of higher education. Under the guidance of “Fiat Lux”, UC Berkeley’s job is to bring new knowledge to light? to provide solutions to improve the human condition, to be a beacon of opportunity for promising young people and top teachers. (The University of UC Berkeley, 2018) As of March 2018, Berkeley alumni, faculty members and researchers include 104 Nobel laureates, 25 Turing Awards winners , and 13 Fields Medalists. In addition, they have also won 9 Wolf Prizes, 45 MacArthur Fellowships, 20 Academy Awards, 14 Pulitzer Prizes and 207 Olympic medals (117 gold, 51 silver and 39 bronze).

Before 1903, all faculty members associated with economics were members of the department of history or politics. At that year, the department of economics at the university of California, Berkeley, was born. Berkeley’s taste for innovation started from the beginning: it was the first department in America to be so named. From these humble beginnings, the Berkeley department of economics has developed into a world-renowned department with a strong faculty of faculty known for its creativity in the field. At Berkeley, students get scholarships to study Spanish with Spanish professors. Students study finance and trade during their summer internships in Singapore. In the fall of 2017, the admission rate for freshmen at Berkeley was 8.7 percent. (University of California Berkeley, Office of Planning and Analysis) The total number of undergraduates is 41,910-30,574, and 11,336 graduate students, of whom 52.7% are women, and 46.2% are postgraduates and professional students. (University of California Newsroom. July 13, 2005) The average weighted GPA of incoming freshmen is 4.44(Unweighted average GPA 3.91), the average SAT score is 1420 and the average ACT score is 33. To be an international student, there also needs a minimum 100 score for TOFEL or 7.0 for IELTS. Before 2002, the university of Berkeley had a third of the nation’s outstanding student scholarships. In 2016-17, the university of Berkeley ranked fifth among National Merit $2,500 Scholarship recipients (136 scholars) and 33 percent of all students accepted the federal Pell grants. Berkeley students have a lot of opportunities to study abroad, they can choose to go to other countries in four seasons each year.
