The majestic aqueducts that we know today. In

The Roman Empire from 27 BC to 1400 AD was established by the two brothers, Romulus and Remus.

Romulus later killed his brother Remus and seized control over the Roman Empire. Roman architecture implemented some aspects of the ancient Greek architecture, there for creating their own architectural style. An example of this would be within the Triclinium in the Roman villas was used for a place of dinning. The Roman civilization was very societal; they would interact with one another in the Thermae which is known as a bathhouse.  One of the most important additions that the Romans brought to today’s modern day society is a composition of the architectural arch. Aqueducts were designed using the configuration of the arches, the arch swiftly led to the creation of dome ceilings used in many houses and buildings. These aqueducts were plumed into a network of fountains that carried water to thousands of Roman civilians.

The Romans dug trenches along the contour line and covered them with bricks. In order to keep the water flowing, they funnelled the water down lead pipes. They also dug deep tunnels through the hills and built shafts in the roof for ventilation.

To allow the water flow across long distances on even ground, they constructed flat walls with a traft on the top, to avoid abstracting traffic on the streets of Rome. Therefore, to prevent this, they manufactured the majestic aqueducts that we know today. In my opinion, the hemispherical structure allows the buildings to stay firm and gain an elegant shape.

In this day and age, a lot of curved edges are being applied to architectural constructions, this is astonishing because the Romans civilization help build the foundations for the buildings that are occurring in the 21st century London. The Forum is located on low ground between the palatine and Capitoline hills. At the centre of the city, the main attraction of the roman public life is the Forum. It was the physical centre of a roman town square; the forum functioned as a public area consisting ‘of temples, basilicas, arches, monuments, residences of kings and priests, promenades and other structures’,  as well as holding events such as sacrifices, elections, public speeches, and political, religious, and social activities. Furthermore, next to the forum is where the market place is situated; this is where the public citizens would able to shop at the open market to buy their everyday products. The basilica is also positioned next to the forum, where the public will be able to bath and socialise with each other. The basilica was a fundamental element of the roman Forum.

The basilica acted as a public gathering building for the public and had multiple functions. For example, it served as a law court, as a marketplace and a church; where the Roman civilians would be able to worship god. A basilica in today’s society would be referred to as a church, a symbol of worship and congregation. The church is a reflection of the basilica, however distorted through the means of evolution, due to adapting to the present society. However still remaining as ‘large roofed public buildings’ with the vital cause of worship. Therefore, Roman architecture has had an ‘international status’, influencing today’s urban fabric across the world.

In today’s 21st century we have the city hall which would have acted as a forum, similar to the Romans. The city hall is located in the city of London where the main attraction, activity happens. The city hall is also where all the laws and political judgements occur.

For example, the ‘strategic planning decisions for London’ were based in the city hall attended by the mayor for a hearing, similar to how the Romans would’ve made important decisions within their own forum. Today London is a modern architectural city that has developed from fundamental foundations of the ancient Romans. The contribution of Roman architecture has shaped many of the buildings and their purposes of the present day. However, even though the buildings have slightly altered through time, their foundations were absorbed into the evolution of urban fabrics, as the majestic aqueducts have continued to be built the same. It can be argued that without the contribution of Roman architecture, we may not have such buildings as the city hall, due to how this can be perceived as a modern day version of the forum.

These buildings also show us that both Roman and modern day societies operated in a similar way, due to the purposes of the buildings such as churches and the city hall, compared to that of the basilica and the forum. Overall I think that roman architecture is still astonishing even to today’s society how they were so creative and build strong structures using intriguing materials to create complex structures having a lack of equipment compared to today’s society, Roman architecture set up the foundations for the modern architects to be imaginative and decretive.
