The concept of Hyperloop is a high speed ground transportation, consisting of passenger pods traveling at transonic speeds in partially evacuated tubes. The idea is an alternative to the high- speed rail system, which was deemed too expensive and slow which was originally proposed by Elon Musk and published by SpaceX in 2013. The growing need for an alternative transportation mode for short-haul travel can be fulfilled by the introduction of Hyperloop. Since the market share for high-speed transport is projected to grow rapidly over the next few decades, the Hyperloop concept could take some pressure off increasingly congested airports and flight routes.
The idea of high speed transport took place in 1812 when the British mechanical engineer and inventor George Medhurst wrote a book detailing his idea of transporting passengers and goods through air-tight tubes using air propulsion. Vacuum trains were first described by rocket pioneer Robert Goddard in the year 1910. While Hyperloop has significant innovations over early proposals for reduced pressure or vacuum-tube transportation apparatus, the work of Goddard has the greatest similarity with the Hyperloop. A number of newly founded companies attempting to commercialize the Hyperloop.
Academic research into the Hyperloop concept has laid its focus mostly on system integration. A conceptual sizing focuses primarily on the aerodynamic and thermodynamic interactions between the pod and tube using the sizing tool OpenMDAO framework5, with recent work focusing on the energy consumption of the system.In superconducting Maglev, which is the fastest magnetic levitation train in Japan with a 603km/h maximum speed, linear synchronous motor is applied for propulsion, and superconducting electromagnet and null flux coil are applied for both levitation and guidance. At present, there are only systems that perform a maximum of two functions among propulsion, levitation, and guidance. Similar methods have been proposed to use for the Hyperloop. However with many devices in the tube, the system gets complex so that there are a lot of disadvantages in terms of cost, operation, and its control.
Non-symmetric double-sided linear induction motor (NSDLIM) that could conduct propulsion, levitation, and guidance is suggested as a future scope as an all-in one system for Hyperloop.
