Therefore, numerous of companies apply the environmental sustainable concept on their products, services, processes, and their daily interaction between them. In this report we nominate Monitoring and Control Centre (ADMCC) to investigate and analyse the aspect that been taking in regards to renewal energy. ADMCC Was established to facilitate Abu Dhabi Emirates to be safe and smart city.

However, Monitoring and Control Centre (ADMCC) is considered a new organization and they still didn’t implement sustainable in their organization. For that reason, we analyse the current situation of Monitoring and Control Centre (ADMCC) and search on the best to propose alternative solution which is based on environmental sustainable concept and theoretical studies. The proposed solution categories into three solution which based on the theoretical part: renewable power source, go green vehicle, and going green business. Company DescriptionThe Monitoring and Control Centre (“ADMCC”) was established by the Executive Council of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi under Abu Dhabi Law No.5 of 2011 (“ADMCC Law”) with the statutory aims of:Managing, organizing and utilizing the systems of monitoring and control devices in vital places, facilities and public and private establishments as well as analysing the data provided by such devices in order to prevent the commission of crimes and discover the perpetrators and preserve security and public order in the Emirate;Ensuring continuous operation of monitoring and control devices and systems and their integration and coherence with other monitoring and control devices and systems in the Emirate.
The vision of the ADMCC is a safe and smart Abu Dhabi. ADMCC is responsible for issuing the permits, non-objection certificates and accreditation certificates for the practice of monitoring works in the public places and facilities, private places and their infrastructure. All the companies and public facilities like hotels and malls is responsible to follow the standards and technical specifications set by ADMCC for security and surveillance.Situation AnalysisADMCC plays a major role in making Abu Dhabi Emirate safe and intelligent and well-known for the Falcon Eye Project. The Falcon Eye is integral system which provide a live feed from visual surveillance equipment. The Falcon Eye project consist of viewing platform (Falcon Eye System), cameras, poles, gantries, and cabinets.
Falcon Eye Project is divided into 3 stages which covered Abu Dhabi main land, Mussafah, Baniyas, Truck Road, Samha, Al Rahba, E11 highway, etc. ADMCC has ongoing projects under construction and also in planning stage. Falcon Eye system is smart system which provides smart warnings of any suspicious object or act , allows quick access to events and incidents, and provide smart video analytic. The Falcon Eye project uses the support of ADDC and Etisalat for power and communication for surveillance and recording videos into the datacentre. ADMCC is paying huge amount monthly for power electricity with the costs AED 400,000 and communication power costs AED13,000,000.There are three departments responsible for designing, executing and maintaining the project. ICT department have a smart application that sense and send a warning informing about the camera status and the maintenance ICT team will take appropriate action.
Other departments have a big role to insure the status of the Falcon Eye asset such as a pole, cabinets, cables, etc, PMO is responsible for executing the project and handover to other departments after successful completion of the porject. Design section has an inspection team to assure as built and all the Falcon Eye project asset in a better shape. Design Section and Service Desk is handling NOC (Non-Objective Certificate) to reduce the conflict between other entities and to protect assets making environment friendly. The eNOC is a government application that been initiates from Abu Dhabi Department of Municipal Affairs in 2016 to make electronically, new projects can be uploaded on eNOC website and all entities can check and approve if there is no conflict, this will reduce the paper consumption, time and easy work flow.ADMCC has two offices at Al Nahyan and Injazat. Employees need to travel both offices for business purpose which cause waste of time and fuel and impacting working productivity.
In addition, ADMCC buildings is not designed with the concept of sustainable environment which contribute to the well-being of the environment. As mention above in the previous section that ADMCC is established in 2011, since then there is no formal team that insuring ADMCC applying sustainable environment concept, for that reason, there is no control on paper consumption and water consumption. As well no formal disposal method of ADMCC assets (office assets and Falcon Eye assets) and no proper reporting for ADMCC sustainable report Emphasis on Renewable energy, efficiency and conservation (Theoretical) What is renewable energy?According to Australian Government – Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA), Renewable energy is produced using natural resources that are constantly replaced and never run out.Just as there are many natural sources of energy, there are many renewable energy technologies. Solar is one of the most well-known, wind power is one of the most widespread, and hydropower is one of the oldest. Other renewable technologies harness geothermal energy, bioenergy or ocean energy to produce heat or electricity.Renewable Power SourceElectricity is one of the essential sources in modern society to conducte their daily activity and one of the main pillars for organization and industry development.
Thus, we can’t imagine how’s our life without electricity, however this energy is not renewable resources which available to us in limited quantities, or those that are consumed too fast then it renewed. according to Isamil Bozkurt 2010, to generate electricity, fossil fuels are being used as its can be stored and transported easily, they are considered as a perfect fuel. However, according to Kadioglu & Unal, consuming fossil fuel (to produce electricity power and fuel for cars) contribute to cause climate change and produce greenhouse such as CO2 and methane. The Greenhouse gases has in impact on trapping the infrared radiation in our earth’s atmosphere. The Greenhouse effect occur when the sunlight or solar radiation enter our earth’s atmosphere, some solar radiation is reflected in the earth’s atmosphere and some is absorbed by the earth’s surface to warm the surface.
Once the earth’s surface absorbed the sunlight energy, the energy emitted from the surface as infrared radiation. However, some of the infrared radiation pass through the atmosphere and some of the are trapped in the atmosphere by greenhouse gases. In the result, causing global warming.
To minimize the impact, people and business most substitute the non-renewable energy to renewable energy, in term of power generation. Solar energy is example of renewable energy due to it limitless availability, clean, and costless. Solar energy is being used as an electric energy which being obtained by means of solar panels and photovoltaic (PV) cells. According to Liqun ; Zhixin, the photovoltaic PV generate system played an important role in total electrical energy demand, and solar photovoltaic energy has attracted a lot of attention because it is renewable, friendly to the environment, and flexible for installation.
Go green vehicle Worldwide people and organization have been increasingly concerned to apply the sustainable environment concept to reduce air pollution, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and preserve energy security through reduction in transportation emissions. recently, the apprehensions for climate change impacts of emissions from mobile sources combined with the need to conserve energy have been vital consideration to reduce greenhouse gases emissions and CO2 emissions. Using go green vehicle such as hybrid cars or electrical car which used batteries to charge the car.
Many car manufactures are moving toward adding a full electric car, due to it’s a clean energy and it’s not contributing in raising CO2 emission. According to Ashraf (2016) the hybrid cars has two or more engine using natural gas, electricity, and petrol. nowadays many cities are switching their public transportation and service vehicles into hybrid cars and buses as a part of the contributing to become their city more environmentally responsible.
According to Ashraf (2016) highlighted the advantages of using such go green vehicle: 1) Environmentally friendly as it has better gas mileage 2) saves money, as more money been spent on the fuels, 3) Less dependence on fossil fuels, 4) Light Materials is been used to build hybrid vehicle. According to Zhang ; Cooke (2007), hybrid car allows the vehicle to travel longer distances than pure-electrics on one battery charge. the car is powered by a battery for the first few miles and once the engine runs out battery, a conventional petrol engine takes over. The plug-in hybrid car is similar to hybrid however, it can functions in either electric or hybrid mode.Going green business Sometime small thing makes big difference, many businesses looking for a way to become environmentally friendly, therefore, it is very important to raise awareness among the employees of going green business. By apply environmental suitability concept is not only help to protect our environment but also help a company to achieve its bottom line.
The definition of green business as “an establishment that produces green output” (Brown, Ratledge, 2011) . Becoming green is a multisided process; there are numerous practices that can be implemented when business wants to move to a green behaviour. According to Kassaye (2001), an environmentally aware business uses at least in one of “4Rs” – reduction, reuse, recycling, and recovery. Some companies in order to save trees they recommend printing on both sides of paper or to print only the main documents.
Some companies also apply the “product stewardship” policy. It means that the manufacturer is responsible for waste reduction, recycling, and the use of renewable materials. Reduce water and office electricity consumption and encourage paper and plastic bottle recycle also contributes to going green business. According to Chen et al. (2006) applying green innovation add to the going green business for example, innovation in technologies and hardware or software innovation that is related to green products or processes, contribute in saving energy, prevention of pollution, waste recycling, and green product designs. According to Yin et al.
(2010) many observed findings confirm a positive relationship between green innovation and firm performance. As well according to Kleindorfer (2005) green product and process innovation not only reducing negative environmental impact, but they also increasing the economic and social performance of a company through waste and cost reduction. A Step to Achieving Environmental Sustainability within ADMCCAccording to Abu Dhabi Global Environmental Data Initiative (AGEDI), 2015, based on the analysis of past and present anthropogenic drivers, future projections using climate models suggest an increase in the UAE’s annual average temperature of around 1°C by 2020, and 1.5-2°C by 2040. Climate change impacts increase national vulnerability and, if left unmanaged, will affect the growth potential of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Potential impacts of climate change on the UAE includes extreme heat, storm surge, sea level rise, water stress, dust and sand storms, and desertification. Even small variations in weather patterns could significantly affect the country’s economic, environmental, and social well-being – National Climate Change Plan of the United Arab Emirates 2017-2050.Since 2006, Masdar has established itself as a global leader of clean energy research, technology and commercialization: by investing in clean energy project, developing renewable energy projects and by displacing tons of carbon dioxide emissions. Within ADMCC, we can also take a step to Achieve Environmental Sustainability by using renewable energy. Using technologies to harness renewable energyIn the UAE, there are several ways to go green by using the available technologies to harness natural and renewable energy. The following are the technologies which would change the way we live and work in the near future. Smart LightingADMCC offices and facilities could use Compact Florescent Lights (CFLs).
CFLs cost more but are vastly cheaper over their life span because it takes eight or more incandescent bulbs to match the life span of a CFL. ADMCC could also adapt a lighting technology designed for energy efficiency. This may include high efficiency fixtures and automated controls that make adjustments based on conditions such as occupancy or daylight availability.Daylight HarvestingThe power of natural lighting to meet the lighting requirements of ADMCC buildings and facilities could help in achieving environmental sustainability.
Just like the Al Bahr Towers on Salam Street in Abu Dhabi, the tower has 2,000 umbrella-like glass elements that automatically open and close depending on the intensity of the light. The adjustable shades help reduce interior heat gains caused by sunlight by around 50 percent according to James Holloway of New Atlas. Intelligent self-sensing controllers will help make optimum use of natural light.Electric CarsADMCC could start by having an Electric Vehicle fleet to reduce carbon footprint. Powered by thousands of Li-Ion batteries, the electric car can do 0 to 60 mph in four seconds, outrunning practically every other production car on the planet.Electric cars have several benefits over conventional internal combustion engine cars, including a significant reduction of local air pollution, especially in cities, as they do not emit harmful tailpipe pollutants. Depending on the source of the electricity used to recharge the batteries, the clean air benefit may only be local because air pollutant emissions may be shifted to the location of the generation plants (ADDC power plants).
This is referred to as the long tailpipe of electric vehicles. The amount of carbon dioxide emitted depends on the emission intensity of the power sources used to charge the vehicle, the efficiency of the said vehicle and the energy wasted in the charging process, typically. Plug-In HybridsAnother option is a hybrid vehicle which can also be powered with bio-ethanol.
Green ComputingComputers in ADMCC can be made from recycled materials with components designed for easy recycling. Energy efficiency will be the hallmark of these devices. Solar EnergyAnother energy that is widely available for ADMCC to use is Solar Energy. Photovoltaic cells will power solar energy systems. Lowering the cost of converting the sun’s photons into electrons. The direct conversion of sunlight to electricity occurs without any moving parts or emissions of carbon dioxide.Solar thermal technology converts sunlight into thermal energy (or heat), which in the past has been used mainly for space heating or to heat water (such as in a solar hot water system).According to ARENA this heat energy can be used to drive a refrigeration cycle to provide solar-based cooling, or to make steam that can be used to generate electricity using a steam turbine which can eventually power ADMCC facilities.
Energy can then be released from storage as required, day and night.Other ways ADMCC can Achieve Environmental Sustainability There are remarkable ways to go green at workplace and make world a wonderful place to live and work.Change the way we commute. Using public transport isn’t that bad. It cuts back on gas and it saves money in the long term.
Setting up a carpooling system could be beneficial to everyone. Also, if an employee lives nearby the office, consider walking there when the weather is pleasant.Pack lunch ahead of time with reusable containers. When we buy food during lunch, it’s likely that it will be packed in a bag we’ll have to throw away. Make sure recyclables are disposed in a recycle bin. Bringing a packed lunch from home using a reusable container would be ideal.
Use reusable water bottles and mugs at work. Disposable water bottles are found all over landfills and their environmental impact is atrocious. With reusable water bottles, we save money and won’t have to ingest the invisible residue that is known to come from throwaway plastic bottles. We can also enjoy the personal touch of drinking coffee from your own mug instead of disposable cups.
Be conscious of printing practices. It’s best to print using the double-sided printing option that comes with many of today’s printers. If that’s not an option, then print what you must and reuse the sheet of paper by writing on the blank side. When you fax, learn ways to do so electronically. There are many virtual options that don’t require to print on a paper in order to send a fax, and e-signatures help you sign off on important documents without needing to do it by hand on paper.Share printed files with coworkers to cut back on how many copies have to be printed. To avoid printing altogether, create digital copies that everyone can open and read from their computers or create a presentation that can be viewed by everyone at once.
Get into the habit of turning off electricity when it isn’t in use. Turn off lights and unplug electronics when they’re not in use in order to save energy.Take the stairs instead of the elevator. It takes a large amount of energy to travel back and forth between floors using an elevator. Furthermore, stairs are a worthy alternative since taking the stairs is a healthier option that can help you get in better shape because of the aerobic benefits.
Instead of paper towels, use hand dryers. Usually, everyone at work is washing their hands throughout the day, which means paper towels are constantly in use. Hand dryers are a sanitary replacement that can largely reduce the use of paper towels. Recommendation ADMCC must apply the going green business, this strategy used when an organization make an effort to reduce its negative environmental impact by reduce utility costs, start recycling and reuse procedural programs, and buy green products. Build a formal team or sustainable committee to insure implementing sustainable, as well create a sustainable policy.
Furthermore, applying the transparency to its stakeholder which include the internal stakeholder (all employees) and external stakeholder (other government entities, customers, outsource, suppliers, and contractors) through quarterly or bi year meeting and generate annual sustainable report which consist of five pillar of sustainable (environment, social, corporate, economic, and ethics). Conclusion To conclude, executing environmental sustainability has advantages in a long term, even if it costly in the beginning, for instance shifting the mode of transport from fuel consumption which participate in CO2 emission and other greenhouse gas, to electric car or hybrid car is more expensive than the regular cars, however in the long term you will stop spending money on patrols. Small thing can make a difference to save our environment for the next generation, for example, switching light after office hours, use public transport, stop printing unnecessary documents, reuse water bottle..etc. Various sustainable environment solution ADMCC an adopt in order them to be suitable.
