Self-Driving Cars By Marcus Ling
Imagine a world where every day you get up and you hop inside a machine that will get you to your office quick and efficient without the worry of safety. Self-driving cars are a point of interest to me. Google, Elon Musk and lots of other companies are all busy on this project that will be making the transportation we will use in the near future. First of all, self-driving cars will save lots of lives every year from road accidents. Marc Andreessen, a software engineer, and American entrepreneur quotes “Google is working on self-driving cars, and they seem to work. People are so bad at driving cars that computers don’t have to be that good to be much better.” Road accidents caused by human error and are the cause of a whopping 1.2 million people’s death. However, the new self-driving cars will make the possibility of road accidents reduce by 90%, saving around one million lives every year! Additionally, they would also save a lot of money, almost $190 billion USD yearly for health care costs associated to road accidents, and that is only the amount in the US “Self-driving cars are the natural extension of active safety and obviously something we should do.” Elon Musk quotes. Second of all, self-driving cars will be much more environmentally friendly. They will use electricity as a substitute to fossil fuel according to USA today- the main cause of global warming. Fossil fuel is made up of crude coal, coal and natural gasses found in geological deposits of organic materials, which are all pretty bad for the environment. And According to the U.S Environmental Protection Agency, 27% of the harmful gas in the air in America is caused by cars and other transportation using gas as a fuel. Americans guzzle over 2 billion barrels of oil every year, so self-driving cars will certainly benefit the environment by saving the energy consumption by 90% according to the Time magazine. Last but not least, self-driving cars are not as expensive as people think they are, despite the fact that they are very advanced. You will be able to get one of them very soon at a low price. They are priced at around 85000 USD if you pre-order one according to Quora. And by 2025, the price will decrease to 7000 USD, they are the same price as the BMW Series 5. They will be diving free on the roads as early as the year of 2022. There will be 54 million self-driving cars by 2035 according to USA Today. The reason why there will be a big price drop because there will be more technological developments that will reduce the cost of manufacturing the software and the parts according to the Chief Executive officer of Aptive Inc., Kevin Clark. Not only will they have a reasonable price, but they will also save you money on insurance. A lot of people are concerned about the loss of jobs of drivers, but what really happens is that one door closes and another one opens, so drivers can now become people who build the self-driving cars. The robots won’t build them all by themselves. The future is going to be glorious. Best of all, self-driving cars will be driving free on the roads safely. This will revolutionize the auto industry and will be a turning point in our daily lives.
