RESEARCH METHODSThis chapter discusses how the methodology was employed in the study. It indicates the research design, research methods, research techniques, the study population, research instruments and data analysis techniques.Research Approach /Type The research has descriptive nature.
It captured the descriptive method to describe the existing status of solid waste management system, the role of different stakeholders, challenges of solid waste management service, and possible measures which helps to tackle the problem. Methods of Data CollectionConducting this study, the descriptive research method was employed to collect and analyze data that can answer the questions which address the current status of the issue in the area and to Assess Solid Waste management system and its challenges in Basaso Puntland State Of Somalia.Questionnaire Questionnaire is quite popular in the case of big inquiry (Kothari, 2004). Households are the main producer of municipal solid wastes. As a result the study addressed the sample households in the city primarily.
So, to address the sample of this large number of population the researcher used questionnaire to take representative and reliable data. The types of the questionnaire were structured questionnaires. The researcher used this type of questionnaires because of its simplicity to administer and inexpensive to analyze relative to unstructured and semi structured type of questionnaires. The questionnaire had both close ended and open ended questions to attain the benefits of both types of questions.
Close ended (‘Yes’ or ‘No’) questions help to obtain quantitative data about solid waste management service and open ended question (i.e inviting free response) helps to acquire data about the awareness or thinking of individuals or groups about the municipal solid waste managementInterview This data collection technique helps to get detail information from the respondents. The respondents of the interview were experts and head of sanitation and beautification agency, Village officials, and associations. The semi structured type of interview questions were employed which is the list of specific questions or topics were prepared and then some other points were raised during the interviewing time. This type of interview helped the researcher to compare and contrast the information obtained from different respondents, and to add other relevant points at the time of the interview.Structured interviews were conducted with the Municipality, Ministry of environment and the Two organizations who contracted the solid waste management in the city.
The aim of the structured interviews was to obtain in-depth information and limit the interviewees within the scope of the research. Prior contact was made with these officials to get their consent and thereafter, the research topic was introduced and started the interview accordingly. The focus group discussion enabled the researcher to explore different views and attitudes of respondents regarding the challenges of solid waste management system. Two focus group discussions were held for the households of two districts among the Six districts of the city, to get the information of how they manage the solid waste before the collection of responsible agencies and how effective is the collection of those organizations.Field observationswere used to get the data that cannot be addressed through the interview, questionnaire and the focus group discussions.
The researcher observed the existing solid waste management practices such as solid waste damping sites, streets, open spaces etc., mainly through photographs.Sampling DesignA sample design is a definite plan for obtaining a sample from a given population. It refers to the technique or the procedure the researcher would adopt in selecting items for the sample.
Sample design may as well lay down the number of items to be included in the sample i.e., the size of the sample (Kothari 2004).
The target population The target population of this study was the urban population of Bosaso city administration. Because the finding of this study is going to infer or generalize the urban municipal solid waste management practice in Bosaso city administration.
