The word maglev comes from the word magnetic levitation. These trains provide several new and exciting possibilities for transportation and travel. They have the possibility at being better than modern wheeled trains. Although such trains aren’t as popular as of now, they are a topic of research in the electrical engineering community. Maglev technology will one day be used throughout the entire world. Maglev trains are already used in several countries like Spain, Germany, France, Japan and China. Maglev trains are faster, more efficient, and more environmentally friendly and energy efficient than transportation systems used today. Maglev trains utilize electromagnets in order to operate, which are magnets created by an electric current. Electromagnets are a coil of insulated wire that is wrapped around an iron cylinder. It functions when current flows through the coil which produces a magnetic field. These electromagnets propel the train above its track, as well as propel it forward. For propulsion, most Maglev trains use electromagnets in linear motors. A linear motor is a regular motor, whose parts have been misshapen and shaped into a arrow design so that it can then be laid out  flat. A linear motor is defined as a motor, which the stator and rotor are parallel to each other and straight. Inside a regular motor a rotor spins fast between the fastened poles of a stator (magnet) when an electrical current is involved. Inside a linear motor the rotor rolls forward past the stator in a linearlayout instead of around a rotating one. (Woodford, Chris)Maglev trains have many pros. No contact is made between the Maglev and the track, which allows for a near-frictionless travel. This component has numerous benefits including higher travel speeds, less noise for the passengers making it quiet, resistance to weather conditions(weather proof), and maintenance is used less frequently needed. With conventional transportation friction between the track and wheels  causes damage over time. This demands both funds and hard labor to repair. Maglev trains do not experience this physical stress which does decrease maintenance capability depletion. Its inexpensive to maintain and operate. Less materials are required to produce these modern trains which are constructed higher quality. Derailment is reduced and can be constructed spacious which increases space and is more comfortable for passengers to ride. It causes little to no air pollution because it burns no fuel. These trains also operate at a higher ascending grade.Maglev trains initially cost more than conventional means of transportation during construction. The cost of construction is extremely expensive due to the fact that a whole new set of tracks are needed for the the maglev trains. Maglev trains also use rare earth elements such as scandium, yttrium, and 15 lanthanides which are expensive to recover and refine. The costs add up to billions and billions of dollars in order to produce such a futuristic train and make use of magnetic propulsion.In conclusion Maglev trains are an innovative breakthrough for transportation/technology.
