Problem Statement The Parkinson’s disease is a non-lethal disease, one of the main                 reasons on why we picked this disease is because it can greatly affect a person’s life if they are diagnosed with this disease, and we feel it deserves more attention. The reason we think it needs more attention is because people of all ages can have it and not realize that they have the symptoms this due to them not being diagnosed with the disease or them not having much awareness of what it can do and how it could affect them. So, it is important that people know the symptoms and ways to treat this disease before it can get any worse Literature Review Cases of Parkinson’s disease have been dated back since 175 AD, but it was not until 1817 that a full medical paper had been published on the disease. The published paper was written by James Parkinson’s hence the name Parkinson’s disease.

The first documented case of Parkinson’s was also dated in 1817 by James Parkinson’s, but before it was called shaking palsy before it was named Parkinson’s. The average age at which Parkinson’s is seen is at 60 and some people are seen with this disease at 40 or younger there isn’t really a biomarker for Parkinson’s. (M.J.

F)        Problem and Symptoms This disease can be caused by the loss of cells in parts of the brain mainly in a part called the substantia nigra which cells produce dopamine. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter chemical which controls movement. And when dopamine is lost is causes peoples movement coordination to be less coordinated. The most recognizable symptom is a tremor in body parts which you aren’t able to control. Also, slowness in movement and body balancing problems can be symptoms. J.F) Cure Currently there is no cure for Parkinson’s, but there is some treatment to help control some of the effects of Parkinson’s. This treatment is given to each person based on their symptoms. The medication might not be able to cure Parkinson’s but It can help you control your symptoms. Some examples of these treatments are medication, surgical therapy and also changing your lifestyle.        An example of medication used to treat Parkinson’s would be Dopamine Receptor Inhibitor which helps mimic dopamine and instead of using dopamine they use dopamine agonist which help relief from some of the Parkinson’s Disease symptoms. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s is a big foundation that donates and helps research for cures and ways to prevent Parkinson’s. They have funded more than $750 million dollars to help patients and researchers. Another institute which is helping is the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke which use animal models to see how this disease progresses and also look for new medications that could work. Harvard’s Stem Cell Institute is also making a big impact on Parkinson’s research. They are experimenting on how to replace some neurons that are affected or destroyed by Parkinson’s Disease. All of these Institutes are having big impacts on the research and the better understanding of what Parkinson’s is and how to treat some symptoms.  Closing Statement Throughout the years there is being more research being done on what Parkinson’s is and on what it affects. Hopefully through this research a cure could be found to help all of those people affected with this disease.
