On September 20, 2011, American president George Bushed addressed to “Mr.
Speaker, Mr. President Pro Tempore, members of Congress and fellow American” (George Bush). Because on September 11, America was attacked by terrorists of Islamic Extremism that leaded a person called Usama bin Laden (George Bush).
In this speech, President George Bush uses a lot of ethos, pathos and, logos to express his purpose. His goal about this speech contains provide evidence to solve comforting problems, affirm the America values and strength, and give a warning to terrorist groups and other countries’ governments. One of the rhetorical strategies Bush mainly used in the speech is pathos. An appeal to pathos was shown when Bush said “Our grief has turned to anger, and anger to resolution.
Whether we bring our enemies to justice, or bring justice to our enemies, justice will be done” (George Bush). These sentences make audience feel very angry about terrorists’ behavior and bush able to make American people more unity to resist terrorists. Bush also mentioned a lot of name in the speech. For example, he mentioned a man called Todd Beamer who rushed the terrorists and saved a large number of people on the ground.
At the end of the speech, Bush talk about a police shield from a man who trying to save others in the World Trade Center but died. Those names will make audience feel sorrowful but it is benefit for Bush to transfer audiences’ sorrow to strength to resist terrorists. Another use of pathos is Bush said “We will not forget South Korean children gathering to pray outside our embassy in Seoul, or the prayers of sympathy offered at a mosque in Cairo. We will not forget moments of silence and days of mourning in Australia and Africa and Latin America” (George Bush). Audience will feel they are cared by others all over the world, they are not alone. That shows America have good relationship with other country, and countries all over the world hated terrorists and will resist it.
In addition, Bush used logos to prove that he is solving comforting problems and he will do somethings about terrorist attack. One major example of logos is he said “We will take defensive measures against terrorism to protect Americans. Today, dozens of federal departments and agencies, as well as state and local governments, have responsibilities affecting homeland security. These efforts must be coordinated at the highest level” (George Bush).
He shows to audience, national already take steps, more federal department and agencies will have highest level to make sure homeland security, people should not feel fear. He also mentioned America ask other national to join and assist, they need the help pf police force, intelligence service, and banking system around the world. His strong use of logos persuade audience trust he and America government can handle it well. Bush also used ethos in his speech. “In the normal course of events, Presidents come to this chamber to report on the state of the Union. Tonight, no such report is needed.
It has already been delivered by the American people” (George Bush). George Bush is the president of America, and the author of this speech is him. Because the president of the United State is voted by citizen, the audience trust Bush, and what Bush said is credible.
