My perfect superhero to me, in this poem, is Sophia. Sophia is a thirteen-year-old girl who’s eager to sail across the ocean from her home in New England to England in order to see her grandfather, Bompie. Sophie seems to believe that her foster parents are her original parents, and whenever she’s asked about who her actual parents were, she seems unable to really answer the question.
Her parents died in a tragic accident at sea, and Sophie has been neglecting this painful memory from herself for quite some time. Sophie’s journey to see Bompie is a hunt to reveal the truth of her past, even though she may not have had realized it at first. Undergoing the sea and being brave is a way for her to put herself back in the situation that spelled her parents’ death.Sophia is also a courageous spirit. She proves herself to be more than capable as a sailor on the wanderer, despite the doubts of her uncle and cousins, who all think that, just because she’s a girl, she doesn’t have the skills and strength to brave the ocean
