My personality enhancesperformance in the workplace by enabling efficiency, however it also impedes performance in the workplaceby stifling creativity. Although the results of ‘The Keirsey TemperamentSorter’ and ‘The Big Five’ are not entirely accurate, they provide a good general idea on the nature of my personality. The Keirsey Temperament Sorter listsme as an ISTJ, an introverted sensing type.On the other hand, theBig Five quiz results reveal that I scored the highest on openness to experience as well as conscientiousness.
As an ISTJ I usually work alone and prefer clear deadlines and goals. In most workplaces, group work is required. I mightnot work as well in groups as more extroverted types. I work efficiently and according to schedule but have a little bit of a harder time collaborating with others. My rigid interpretation of work assignments and rules could stifle creativity in the workplace by discouraging new ideas or methods for completing tasks. For example, I might insist on doing things according to facts and adhering to the status quo, while a more creative colleague would have found a better way to solve the problem.
My high conscientious score means that I learn fast, am attentive to details, and set high standards for myself. Although these traits result in higher job performance,Monfort 2conscientiousness is also inversely correlated with creativity. In addition to this I might have problems balancing work and life, focusing too much on work.
One would think that working hard wouldlead to better performance in the workplace, however, this can result in a work-family conflict which would decrease my performance in the long run by lowering the quality of my work (Robbins and Judge142).My low neuroticism score may also stifle creativity in the workplace. People who worry more may perform better on creative tasks than people who are less neurotic because peoplewhoworrymoreare not as complacent(Robbins and Judge122). Creativity is an important part of the workplace because many businesses depend on innovation to succeed in a competitive market. My personality may cause me to be satisfied and thus not come up with new ideas. I should work on recognizing opportunities to exert creativity.
I should also try toincorporateother’sideas, especiallyideasfromthosewhoexcelincreativity. My high conscientiousness as well as INTJ personality lead to success and efficiency in the workplace, howeverI needto carefullymonitor my work-life balance, as I am prone to focusing too much on work, which couldhave negative results on my work satisfaction, overall happiness, and ultimately performance in the workplace. Creativity is essential to most businesses, and I need to beaware that my personality may hinder creativity.WiththisinmindI willbeabletogive others an opportunity to express their creativity as well as developmy own.
