Nowadays, the world technology is developing rapidly. The technology of a wood planer was developed first in the ancient city of Rome and still used nowadays. historically the world have revealed comparatively more modern planers, with time and technology planers have undergone several enhancements and development, starting from a simple hand planer evolve into well-known wood planer machine. This project aim was to develop a mini machine for designing prototypes from wood with features such as sanding and planer. Using this prototype, the consumer will get more associated to the “actual feel” of the system, since the interactions with prototyping will alter the consumer to higher perceive to the necessities of the required system. Prototyping is an attractive plan for complex and huge systems, which gives an overall view of a working system. That is why a wood planning machine is therefore targeting foreign market, which will help to wider our export.
IntroductionIt is very difficult to imagine the world without wood production. Started from a simple saw tool, nowadays we have an incredible wood design machines, we can design a wide range of products and use it in several purposes. Today everyone uses wood products such as building materials, furniture, paper, tools, weapons, and more which has large parameters somehow made by large machine, however, large machines cannot get micro parameters that’s why there is a demand on accurate mini machines. Updated with the new technology science investing on the new types of wood machines, searching for a new way to make small modules, make better surface quality, create less expensive equipment and reduce waste. However, a planer is a limited tool that cannot make a features like sanding, which is impossible to make a product without these features. Therefore, you would need the use of other machines that has these features so a demand for a wood machine with a full package of features is needed. My project is bringing all these features in one part where I am creating a mini wood planer.
Aims – to develop a mini wood machine based on a wood planer with wider range of features.

Planer history After the saw, the Planning Machine is no doubt the most important tool. For almost 2000 years, the plane has been one among the most necessary tools. It helped to form history, however its origins for the primary time goes to the Iron Age. Graphic representations of the tool were found in Roman or Romanized countries, on ceremonial occasion monuments.
In the earliest times, wood was roughly cut with an edge tool and ironed with a stone. The primary plane was most likely a chisel-like tool inserted in a very block of wood, however none of those rudimentary tools has become famed. By Roman times, however, nice developments had taken place.
The first known planes were found at Pompeii that had a wood case encased with associate degree iron plate concerning 1/4″ thick. The mouth was cut a couple of third of the manner back from the front, and therefore the iron, set at associate degree angle of fifty degrees, was command with a wedge against a spherical iron bar across the gap. A position for the proper hand was established by cutting a slot through the wood core.
With the passing of the Roman Empire, the image once more had become blurred until the center Ages. The artist’s deep attention to detail helped us to get a good deal concerning the tools of this era, the front of the plane is fitted with a carven handle for the mitt and therefore the back of the stock is left flat.
This seems to be just a series of crude mechanical ideas that were never placed into a perfect practical way. It was left to Bentham to express his own practical ideas for a better development.
In 1827, Malcolm Muir, of Glasgow, had developed an improved planning machine. It had for its object the preparation of complete flooring boards. The operations of sawing, planning, and shaping were all provided in one component, and a variety of the machines were placed into several operations.
John Cumberland brought out several enhancements in 1847; however, the event during this country was greatly delayed by the tyrannical restraint of the holders of a patent that was called the Woodworth planning machine. In 1828 ,William Woodworth, a recent carpenter in created a plane which was described as “the combination of rotary cutters and feeding rollers and of rotary matching cutters therefore on kind a tongue or groove on each the sides of the lumber at identical time that the principal surfaces are planned.”His patent extended for fourteen years, however was extended from the day of its expiration for an extra term of seven years. It wasn’t assumed that the Woodworth would have profited by his invention, his sensation against the machine was strong enough, and also the mill within which the primary machine was used had to be watched each day and night for many months.
After the patent extension, he took the decision of selling it out for what he may get and succeeded in attracting Samuel Schenck, which later was responsible of controlling the sales in different geographical areas.Gibson started an oversized support at Albany for producing the machines, and a planning mill where he may demonstrate them while operating.
In July 1843, the first patent was given and a reissue obtained including “a tiny restriction roll.” From this point, the prejudices of the workers ceased and the demand for planning machines multiplied so fast.
The owners through a mutual affection authorized an explicit variety of machines, giving every mill owner the prerogative for a given quantity of territory that they charged a royalty.
Efforts were created to avoid this patent owing to the sturdy feeling against the tyranny of these owning it. Joseph B. Andrews has developed “two endless feed aprons.” The Beckwith and the Gay machines in Pennsylvania and the Brown machine in Massachusetts were all developed for the aim of evading the Woodworth patent; however, their development was stopped by injunctions and declared infringements. A person named Norcross, however, has succeeded and withstood the suit of the Woodworth patent holders.
In 1856, the extended patent had however twenty-seven days longer to run. Gibson with few of interested people were there and succeeded to introduce the session where they have to increase the patent for an extra term of seven years from December 27.
Users of this early machine were significantly owing to defective construction. The cylinder boxes refers to raise and lower perpendicularly, and it had been necessary to shorten or lengthen the belt for every adjustment. The finger driving that were used to apply the connection at the highest, bottom rolls used for not allowing an expansion, and consequently these had to be modified for every set-up.
In 1857, James A. Woodbury, of Boston, adjusted his own plan for moving ahead by adding two separate screws.
On June 15, 1866, Charles Burleigh Improved extension gears where he added a head chip breaker that was a valuable invention, which as a result it prevented the board from slivering whereas being submitted to the action of the aspect cutters.A Dimension planning machine, called the grey & Woods planer, was the modification of the recent Daniels planning machine and was developed for the aim of straight egression of boards.
Proxxon vs. thecooltool: products
In this chapter, two companies’ and their produced wood machines features will be compared.
First company is Proxxon which is a company based in manufacturing devices for the MICROMOT system which have high quality precision, the power tools for model makers, mold makers, toolmakers and many more. They focus on standard screw driving tools of the highest quality.
Second company is TheCoolTool, which is specialized in the development of manufacturing and distribution of innovative designs, prototypes and educational machines.

Table SEQ Table * ARABIC 1 comparison of manufacturing features
In table 1, there was the comparison of two companies by features:
Both companies provide these features in their products:
Drilling: is a cutting method that is used to create a hole of circular cross-sectional in solid materials. Both companies operates with this features considering drilling is one of the most required operations in manufacturing process.
Milling: is implied by using revolving cutters to take off some material from a workpiece by feeding the cutter into the working piece at certain and different directions.
Turning: is an operation in which a cutting tool is usually a non-rotating tool where the fixed part of the machine, is the only rotating part. The turning could be either external or internal depending on the workpiece requirements. This is a widely used operation, which is implied in both companies’ products.
Sanding: is a powerful tool used for smoothing surfaces by abrasion with sandpaper. It is a very important feature in wood production for finishing surfaces and providing it with a smooth finish.
Cutting: is use to separate or to make a gap of a physical component, into two or more portions, through the application of a directed force.
The differences between the company’s products:
Combined features: a machine that can make more than one operation.
Size: it is an important feature to improve performance or meet specific requirements.
Small size machine is necessary for one-piece production and for a precise accuracy while medium size can produce bigger products with higher amount of items but with lower accuracy then the small size machine. The large size machine, which is specialized in lot and mass production, has the lowest accuracy comparing to the other types.
Planer: is a wood operating tool, which is used for manufacturing boards of even thickness that conjointly happen to be completely flat on either sides.
Proxxon produces small and medium machines while Thecooltool Company produces only small machines, both companies are interested in developing small modules with very precise accuracy that is why they avoid producing large machine since precision of their product is one of their primary goals. Proxxon has many machines with different features but only one operation per machine while Thecooltool Company produces a machine that can operate few or even more processes by just switching tools, therefore, an idea of a mini wood machine that has both sanding and planer features was developed, so, in the next chapters this idea will be promoted further.
The development of a mini wood production machine
In this chapter, there will be a review about planer, its main parts and their role.
A planer is a wood functioning tool, which is implied for producing boards of equal thickness, which result in a completely flat on both sides.
The wood planer process:
To specify the depth cut either by regulating the cutter drum or by arranging the platform.
Turn on the machine.
input the board into the machine
The board is brought directly by the in-feed roller
The board is placed below the rotating blades of the cutter drum.
The out feed roller moves consistently the finished section of the board out of the machine and therefor a smooth and consistent reduction in thickness is accomplished across the board in no time.
The sanding process is an added tool the machine whish is a powerful tool used for smoothing surfaces by abrasion with sandpaper. It is a very important feature in wood production for finishing surfaces and providing it with a smooth finish.
