It’s incredibly easy to overlook how profoundly the world has changed over the last couple of decades.

Not long ago, before the Internet, mobile devices and cloud applications existed , data resided mostly on gigantic mainframes and , later, on the hard drives of personal computers. Most of these machines were little more than stand-alone islands in a vast sea of computers. Getting data from one device to anotrher was no simple task.

The “Internet of things” (IoT) is becoming an increasingly growing topic of conversation both in the workplace and outside of it. The Internet of Things is creating a new world, a quantifiable and measureable world, where people and businesses can manage their assets in better informed ways, and can make more timely and better informed decisions about what they want or need to do. This new connected world brings with it fundamental changes to society and to consumers. By sensing our surrounding environment, the IoT will create many practical improvements in our world, increasing our convenience, health and safety, while at the same time improving energy efficiency and comfort. The IoT will be a new source of wealth creation.

IoT describes a system where items in the physical world, and sensors within or attached to these items, are connected to the Internet via wireless and wired Internet connections. These sensors can use various types of local area connections such as RFID, NFC, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Zigbee. Sensors can also have wide area connectivity such as GSM, GPRS, 3G, and LTE. IoT impacts every business. Mobile and the Internet of Things will change the types of devices that connect into a company’s systems. These newly connected devices will produce new types of data. The Internet of Things will help a business gain efficiencies, harness intelligence from a wide range of equipment, improve operations and increase customer satisfaction. IoT will also have a profound impact on people’s lives.

It will improve public safety, transportation and healthcare with better information and faster communications of this information. Logistics is a rapidly evolving market; many factors are shaping the future of how company’s move goods and what they will require from their transportation carrier. Trends and challenges in today’s supply chains mean evolving logistics networks must be prepared to deliver results in an ever-changing business environment.Over the past 50 years, logistics, an integral part of supply chain management, has evolved along with the changes that have taken place in business. Up until the 1980’s, logistics was largely regarded as a field that required, “not much thinking,” but all that changed in the mid 80’s, as ERP systems allowed analysis of data and greater automation. The evolution continued in the 1990’s with manufacturing growth internationally, the emergence of complex supply chains and the realization that companies could no longer operate in silos and the 2000’s brought improved supply chain visibility and communications, explosion of mobile devices, continued globalization and the start of online sales.

The introduction of cloud computing Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) and Business-Processes-as-a-Service (BPaaS) in the 2010’s rounds out the logistics of today.Today, demanding customers, complex supply chain and ever-changing relationships with third-party logistics (3PL’s) providers are prompting supply chain management professionals to closely examine the adaptability and agility of their logistics networks, because logistics will play an ever-greater role in delivering high-performing results. The demand for freight transportation has been rising for many years at both the national and global level. Existing transportation volumes are already overloading today’s infrastructure creating difficult-to-expand bottlenecks. At the same time, population shifts are in evidence, indicating a growing number of people living in cities and metropolitan regions, while increasing individualization is another factor that will transform the logistics of future. These are just some of the trends that will intensify in the coming years. The logistics industry is going through a time of rapid and unprecedented transformation. The future of logistics is paved with innovation and technology.

Today, the industry is cautiously adopting these technologies to provide faster, cheaper, more reliable and sustainable delivery. At the same time, their customers, primarily the manufacturers and retailers, are wasting no time urging their 3PL logistic providers to integrate these new technologies into their service; such as The Internet of Things (IoT) this revolutionary technology allows devices to communicate with each other within an existing internet infrastructure without human intervention, some 3PL companies are currently using machine-to-machine (M2M) technology. Its application in the future of logistics is expected to increase speed, decrease waste and reduce overall costs. Other technology is driverless electric vehicles; this has had a lot of people predicting that the future belongs to self-driving vehicles. Such a vehicle is equipped with electronic eyes and ears and capable of navigating without human input.

Its application in logistics can make an enormous reduction in costs.
