In the development of children, the occurrences one goes through childhood affect them as an adult. What they see and what they experience from their parents is most likely what they will perform once they are older. The effects can be both emotional and physical. The cause of childhood trauma is based on negative experiences.The trauma that these children experience is carried with them until adulthood because these emotion are compressed within. Between the ages of 0-6 is usually when traumatic experiences occur.

After all of the emotions are compressed as an adult they begin to cope with everything that they already experienced or with what they would have liked to happen. According to scientific research childhood trauma is mostly composed of the following: abuse, neglect, violence, lack of attachment, etc.  All of these components affect the scientific development of the brain, thus the growth and behavior of the now adult.Now as an adult experiences affect one in both physical and mental health aspects of life. Some show this through intense behavior similar to what they were exposed to at a younger age, others shows intense fear in order to prevent what they experienced at an early age. Intense behavior becomes violence and abuse toward others, these people are not necessarily conscious of their action that is why it is harder for them to seek help. Living in fear, can be seen for example when a parents is abusive, the child can either grow up and be abusive as well or it will grow up and not trust others because of the childhood experience. These symptoms then have an impact on how the adult will function in society.

What this experiment consisted of was that the  mothers were interviewed when their children were in the ages of 5, 7, 10, and 12 on whether the children had experienced maltreatment by an adult, bullying by peers, or involvement in an accident. At age 12, children were asked about bullying experiences and psychotic symptoms. Children’s reports of psychotic symptoms were verified by clinicians. The results showed that those who received maltreatment and abusive environment at a young age were most likely to show psychotic disorder.Science reveals that the positive and negative experiences that one has in their life can reshape the brain. Based on an article from Science Today stated that the more a child witnesses abusive violence more neuron connections are created in some regions of the brain that involve fear, anxiety, and impulsiveness. In contrast less are created in regions that are connected with reasoning and controlness.

Although, trauma can lead to these the brain has some stableness that can reheal itself from the damage.It just a matter of knowing how to reverse the connections in the child’s brain by nurturing them.These traumas can be the result of many things. According to The National Child Traumatic Stress Network,” intentional violence such as child physical or sexual abuse, or domestic violence or the result of natural disaster, accidents, or war.”  This article also states that ” Young children also may experience traumatic stress in response to painful medical procedures or the sudden loss of a parent.” (NCTSN)  Trauma is not always cause through physical experiences, but also through mental and emotional ways. Emotional and psychological trauma is the result of stressful events.  Even if it doesn’t involve physical harm traumatic events  sometimes involve unsafety or insecurity in life.

There are true stories that show how a parents trauma can affect their children’s life. For example, Holly Riordan, an author who has written many books, talks about  the trauma her mother had as a kid never went away.  She explains that her mother had gone through some issues in her childhood causing her a trauma.

Later on all she can remember was being in a hospital with nurses coming in and out of the room. She did not know what was going on, she was confused. After she woke up her dad came in the room and explained to her what had happened. Her mother had overdose her sister and her with her pills. Her mother did this to them because when she was small she saw several times how her dad came home drunk and did not know how to stop him. The day she saw her husband come in the house drunk she did not know how to react and this is when all those bad events in her life came back and took her to take the wrong decision. Even though these are some of the things that can happen in someone’s life, there are ways to cure the trauma they are facing.  In order to heal from psychological and emotional trauma, a person needs to resolve the unpleasant feelings and memories they have long avoided, learn to regulate strong emotions, and rebuild their ability to trust other people.

There are many therapies that can help out with this.  According Lawrence Robinson, Melinda Smith, M.A., and Jeanne Segalto, author of a website called there are ways to help cure these traumas. They mention some ways that can help such as Somatic experiencing focuses on bodily sensations, rather than thoughts and memories about the traumatic event.

; Cognitive-behavioral therapy helps process and evaluate thoughts and feelings about a trauma; There is also EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) which incorporates elements of cognitive-behavioral therapy with eye movements or other forms of rhythmic, left-right stimulation that can “unfreeze” traumatic memories. There are ways out of this problem, but the first step is to take a decision and get help.
