In to take a look on his beliefs

In this paper, I argue how the aestheticism is present
in this novel and how this perspective influences the plot and the characters.

First of all, I will relate the main point of this philosophical
aesthetic that art is created only for its beauty. This literary movement puts
aesthetic values at the center of spiritual life. If we want to understand this
type of movement in Oscar Wilde’s perspective, we need to take a look on his
beliefs about art and morality. In his wonderful preface of the novel ”The
picture of Dorian Gray”, Oscar Wilde points out that “the artist is the
creator of beautiful things.” This affirmation illustrates that art
should create beauty and pleasure and” the artist can express everything”,
said Wilde.

This novel illustrates
many different themes like the dual nature of man, self-discovery, the decay,
the danger of manipulation, narcissism, the balance between body and soul etc.
which highlight the most important aspects of morality.

The center point of the plot and the whole novel is
Dorian Gray’s meeting with the painter Basil. That’s the first change in his
life. The painter was fascinating by Dorian’s beauty and from the first time he
saw in him not only inspiration, but art itself. When Dorian visits the painter
for his portrait he meets Lord Henry, who will become the reason of Gray’s decay.
In a confused moment of jealousy makes a wish: he wants to be always beauty and
young and the sings of old age to reflect on the painting. The wish comes true
and the paint become the reflection of his soul and with every mistake it
become deteriorated: ”The
Picture of Dorian Gray dramatizes
the

degeneration
of the gentleman who masquerades as a type into the type of the degenerate.” (Deirdre,118)

The friendship
between Lord Henry and Dorian Gray is a sort of manipulation. Lord Henry tries to persuade
Dorian to trust in the principles he espouses, and Gray follows him in
everything without hesitations.

Another
important relationship is between Dorian Gray and the actress Sibyl Vane. He likes
her from the first sight. But his love was superficially and that causes Sibyl’s
decay.

”In
Wilde’s novel, the actress Sybil Vane kills herself in response to Dorian’s demand
that she present an aesthetic façade at the expense of what she perceives as
her real self. She poisons herself with what Dorian’s aesthetic mentor, Lord
Henry Wotton, describes as “some dreadful thing they use at theatres.” (Brantlinger,221)

His unreal love makes her losing all the
talent for acting. For her this was true love and because ”her love kills her art” she kills herself.  (Brantlinger,222)
