In today’s world

In today’s world, we discover ourselves communicating more and more through social media and through interactions like text messaging, video calls and alternative online platforms out there. This implies that the overwhelming majority of people are using social media as their main way of communication. Facebook has over five hundred million users, whereas Twitter has over two hundred million users. That’s while not even counting YouTube video blogs and alternative forms of blogs on the internet. There’s no doubt that students are actively engaged in online communities, the virtual world has become more lively than it can be noticed outside. What can we do for students for them to be able to differentiate between formal and informal writing, what kind of effects are these sites having on students and how can parents counteract the negative and bolster the positive effects, and how can parents reduce the negative aspects of social media while improving upon the positive results? All those effects are raising the question: Is social media really affecting the way students write essays?
To begin with students should separate between the way to write on social media platforms like Twitter or Facebook and the way students should write on formal essays, however, these days students cannot differentiate between formal and informal writing. However, although people are concerned about this aspect of social media, there also are some people who disagree and say that the use of social media has helped students be more creative and imaginative. The Pew Research Center, a non-profit organization that studies attitudes and trends, surveyed 2,462 US writing teachers in 2013 to look at their experience of the effects of “digital tools” including social media on writing. For the most part, the teachers were unexpectedly positive, with 78 percent agreeing that digital technologies encourage student creativity and personal expression (Jacob Funnell, 2017). This implies that social media doesn’t only have negative aspects to it, nonetheless, it helps students write expressively and meaningfully which increases their writing skills in some way. This is why parents and teachers should work on the negative parts and transform them to helpful effects for the students to increase their ability to write clearly and confidently.
Each coin has two sides, and social media has several positive impacts on people and on students. It has become the most significant place for self-expression, but it also has some negative effects that should be worked on. Most of the negative aspects can be overcome by reducing the amount of time spent on social network sites, while still gaining from the positive effects. and by providing more quality time to face to face social interactions. Moderating their access to social media is one excellent method to also give students time to spend on more useful things to do, and focus on other factors of life.
Some people say that even in the past few generations kids have changed a lot. More than twenty years ago kids weren’t as smart and as fluent as today’s kids. In the past, kids would just play with physical toys and play outside with other kids their age, without being open to the world and other cultures. Today everything has changed, in today’s world you see kids as young as 3 to 5 years old holding mobile phones watching and playing, while middle-aged kids from as young as 7 years old have accounts on multiple platforms of social media like Facebook and Instagram, in addition to also playing video games frequently. Moreover, kids these days are aware of what’s happening around them, this change is mostly coming from social media since it opens them to the world. On the other hand, with young students being this clever and mindful they attain some negative qualities. Parents and teachers can’t control or manipulate them to do certain things. Young kids nowadays also tend to disrespect and not listen to people older than them which could also be an effect of social media, because when using social media it seems like they are in their own world and also with control of whatever they want.
In the end, there isn’t a simple answer regards whether or not social media is useful or not overall. On the one hand, it is encouraging more individuals to spend more time on writing more often, which is surely a good thing to take under consideration, On the other, it may be tempting students to gain bad habits that don’t belong in a very skilled work environment like formal writing. Social media is an indispensable element of our modern life. We cannot deny the increasing growth and expansion of technologies since everything is changing step by step. New advancements are perceived by society with caution and suspicion. However, we have got to adapt to nonstop changes in our world and try to focus on the positive impacts of them. This technological progress also has opposing influence. From my perspective, we should not abandon the idea of social networks simply because sometimes they have a negative effect on our conscience, but try to eliminate those disadvantages by raising these issues publicly.
