In order to become a pilot there are many requirements an applicant must meet. Two of the bona fide job requirements for this position are: the applicant must pass a physical and mental medical test, and the applicant must be in a certain age group to apply and must retire at age 60. The medical test examines the nervous system, cardiovascular system, gastrointestinal system, genitourinary system, musculoskeletal system, nose and throat conditions, hearing, vision, ocular muscle balance, and colour perception (Part IV – Personnel Licensing and Training, 2015). This test ensures that the applicant has “no issues past or present or any disability or any effect onside effect of any prescribed or non-prescribed therapeutic medication taken” (Part IV – Personnel Licensing and Training, 2015). The applicants must not have any active, latent, acute or chronic disability (Part IV – Personnel Licensing and Training, 2015). Moreover, the applicant must be free of any wound, injury or sequelae from operation (Part IV – Personnel Licensing and Training, 2015).
Furthermore, the applicants must pass the “table for colour perception requirement” (Part IV – Personnel Licensing and Training, 2015). The medical test is a mandatory requirement because the pilots need to be physically and mentally fit to safely perform their job and it ensures the safety of others on board. Any harm to the pilot puts the lives of passengers in danger. To ensure the safety of the passengers, these medical tests are conducted. The frequency of these tests depend on the applicant’s age and the type of license (General information on pilot licences and permits, 2018). An airline is expected to exercise the highest possible degree of safety for its passengers and crew.

This is due to the risks and consequences involved in hiring an unqualified applicant for the position of an airline flight officer, which can be great as this job position requires a high degree of skill and involves human risk (Belinda, 1983). Moreover, a pilot is required to retire at age 60 due to safety concerns regarding in-flight medical emergencies regarding older pilots. As we age our motor skills and overall physical abilities start to diminish which is why it’s important to retire as the effective coordination and functioning of airline pilots is highly important for flight safety. In conclusion, these bona fide job requirements are in place to ensure the safety of everyone on board from any type of risks that may place one’s life in danger.
