Individuality plays a critical role in human nature. We as people always try to do things that separate us from others. We receive significant gratification when were told we are the best of best at something as well as when we do something more impressive then just one other person. As much as we don’t like to admit we always strive to be better then everyone else at everything we do. Sometimes we even make up stories to lead others to believe that we are better then we truly are.
For example, in Coffee and Cigarettes there is a sketch in which a musician tries to play himself off as a doctor who just preformed a tracheotomy on the side of a road in order to save a mans life (Director: Jim Sarcasms, 2003). This was right after his friend questioned his relevance and talent, which caused him to respond with a lie to make himself seem greater and of more importance to the world. He had to make up a lie in order to momentarily gain self-esteem and seem “cooler in front of his friend. However his friend picked up on the lie but didn’t say anything in order to not be mean and socially acceptable. The way we act in order to get attention and make our selves’ feel of greater value is also an important characteristic of human nature.

We all lash out whether it’s to gain attention or to seem dominant. Every time we lash out we try to find excuses in order to seem cool talking back but also not suffer the consequences. This is greatly expressed in Los Angels Notebook where, “every booze party ends in a fight.Meek little wives feel the edge of the carving knife and study their husband’s necks” (Doing 2).
The people used the Santa Ana winds as a scapegoat for all of their deviant acts. They all understand that the weather can’t have an effect on their behavior but they still use it as an excuse to do the things they want to do. Our trust in other people’s word is another thing that is a part of our human nature. We trust people disregarding the fact if they’re family or a complete stranger. We always try to find the best in people and assume they wouldn’t IEEE to you.
The best example of this is when we go to a doctor for the flirts time. We trust that person right of the bat simply because in our minds a doctor would never try to hurt you. The doctor gives us medicine such as hydrocarbon which is just letters on paper but can kill you even given wrongly. However, we trust that the doctor will only give us the right medicine for our problem. We put our precious lives in the hands of complete strangers because that’s how life works and it can’t function without trust.
