For Getting Job: English is essential for getting a good job and better salaries.
Multinational business organizations and many international corporations ask for people who have a good working knowledge of English. Even job advertisements in local market also require English knowing people. People who go abroad for work also need to know English. English is need for a variety of jobs as like air hostess, pilot, travel guide, media manager etc.
According to Ismail (2012), employers expect graduates in the job market to have soft skills such as communication skills, English proficiency, general and current knowledge, ability to serve customers, and so on. Poor English proficiency is among the five major factors affecting the difficulty of getting a job. This is supported by a study conducted by Abdullah (2007) which found that 33.3% of unemployed graduates arise from weak English proficiency. According to the Ministry of Human Resources, there are 20,217 unemployed graduates in the country, including graduates from both local and foreign graduates (The Star, 2006a), arising out of weak English language proficiency and do not understand the employers’ needs and the jobs offered.
This is why they are not eligible for work despite the numerous vacancies until the Ministry of Human Resources implements the Unemployed Graduate Training Program to help address unemployment issues among graduates (The Daily News, 2005; The Sun Daily, 2006).
