Ethical leadership plays an enormous role within an organization and is usually recognized as one of the most important aspects in forming an ethical workplace. Ethical leadership can be associated with an individual’s personal appearances such as honesty and trustworthiness. These leaders are known as decision-makers who care about their staff and the society. According to (Brown ; Trevino 2006), these persons are ethical ; moral in their individual lives and their professional professions as well. It was also stated by Brown et al. 2005, that the ethical leadership can be seen from three critical aspects which includes treating individuals fairly and actively managing morality. For example, treating individuals fairly can be prove by an individual principles and standards which are basic fundamentals of ethical leadership where the individual that is in a supervisory position is showing characteristics like being open-minded and truthful to their team members and subordinates. A moral individual can be defined as influential person who take their moral individuality to be very significant and therefore inspiring to perform in ways that are rational and logical.
No organization would like to be recognized as being unethical. Subordinates are more likely to displace some sort of ethical behaviour in their workplaces if they are aware of the morally sound organization. Transparency can somewhat play an important role in many organizations and it is also to uphold the image and reputation of the organization which can be at stake. To showcase ethical leadership, one must set examples for their subordinates to follow. Organization create policies and code of conducts which are useful and helpful as it sets guidelines for employees. It is also important that staff to feel safe in their work environment. For instance, if they see someone within the organization behaving unethically, it may be someone senior to them, they should feel secure to tell their higher leader about the matter. Complaints being filed should be anonymous and high-level leaders should keep the information confidential and not spread the information to everyone within the organization. Another example would be for employees to be trained in ethics regularly which can help create a better ethical workplace. Employers can even look at bring in motivational speakers to address certain situations. To ensure that ethical practices are followed, they should be taken seriously and strict punishments should be set out for those who work unethically or break the code of conduct.
It is said that producing an ethical workplace consist of diverse factors above and beyond ethical leadership. The human resource department of an organization must be mindful and certain of employees that are hired by the firm. It is difficult for an organization to hire new individuals who have different morals than the ones of the organization. For example, human resources department should ask about their values and ethics that the organization seems as making or breaking the business.
In conclusion, there are some other factors that do affects an organization when building an ethical organization. On the other hand, ethical leadership is the most important factor that relates to leaders.
