Courtney NeildProfessor StentsonPER 201 26 January 2018Gun Control ?Gun control is a big topic talked about as a world-wide issue. These debates dealing with banning guns has been argued for many years. There are many opinions supporting each side that can be argued back and forth.
The main point that gets brought up is the right to our second amendment. Many people are against gun control because they don’t want their right to bear arms to be taken away. ?The biggest controversy about the gun control laws is that many people do not want their rights taken away.
The second amendment states the right to keep and bear arms and was added to the United States Constitution in 1788. The constitution was written for the people and while none of these amendments can be taken away from the people there is nothing stated about setting limits or stipulations on these amendments. The constitution was written many years ago in a time when the world was very different, but we cannot try to interpret the constitution to justify what we think was meant by the second amendment. We have to accept it as it was written “”A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.
” Congress can write laws and try to regulate gun control but they cannot change the second amendmentThere are many individuals, states, organizations, politicians and courts that have and will continue to voice the good and bad on guns and gun control. The “Pro” side of gun control has been a believer that the right to bear arms was not meant for anybody and everybody is entitled to carry or possess a gun and carry that firearm wherever they want to go. They accept the laws restricting people from carry or possessing guns under certain circumstances and that these laws are needed. They reflect show how times have changed since the constitution was written and these laws help to keep citizens safe. Examples of these laws are: prohibiting felons and the mentally ill from the right to own a firearm and not allowing guns in schools and government buildings. Citizens have the right to protect themselves, their family, home and possessions and many of these citizens own a firearm for protection.
They know that this may be the job for law enforcement officials but they cannot protect all of the people all of the time. They know that statistically there are more deaths in the United States related to health issues than that related to gun issues. According to the 2016 CDC report, gun related homicides comes out to being about number 50 in the leading cause of death in America. (CDC). They think that children should be taught about gun safety in the same way that they are taught about all children safety like electricity, fire, water. The Con side of gun control or those who want stricter gun lawsbelieve that there should be federal background checks on all guns and ammunition and all guns should be registered.
They are happy about the bump stock restriction and would like to see the same thing done with high capacity magazines. These have been used in the mass shootings and turn a person in to a mass killer instead of just a murderer. Either way the result is going to be bad, but if the magazine does not have the capacity to hold 60 or 90 bullets then the situation could have better results.
They would like to see better/stricter restrictions on domestic violence misdemeanor or convicted abusers or stalkers having the right to own and possess firearms. A lot of these violent crimes on partners and women can be prevented if there were laws protecting these victims just like the laws protecting public. Lastly, the second amendment was written a long time ago and when they referred to the right to bear arms they were referring to long guns and pistols. Not the AR-15’s and semi-automatic rifles that people are buying today with silencers and other add-ons. (CGA).
Actually it was included in an assault weapons ban that expired in 2004 (Procon.org). This kind of oversite is what has those against the right to bear arms so upset.Every citizen has the right to own a gun and since “The Gun Control Act of 1968 (GCA or GCA68) is a U.
S. federal law that regulates the firearms industry and firearms owners.” And falls under the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). (Wikipedia) It is their responsibility toenforce gun control laws and keep abreast of all new laws, hearings, and petitions on a national and local level in regards to gun control. Both sides provided information that makes sense for more gun control.
The pro-side justifies their right to bear arms and the con-side really just wants stricter gun laws to better protect the American citizens. Whether you are for or against gun control just remember that the second amendment allows every citizen the right to bear arms, own a gun it is each of our responsibility to abide by the gun control laws to ensure that this right is never taken away.
