Animal Farm”Power resides only where men believe it resides. A shadow on the wall, yet shadows can kill. And often times a very small man can cast a very large shadow” this quote was said by George Martin.

This quote is an example of how power can corrupt. The same concept was in the book as the pigs used their power to control the whole farm. “Animal Farm” is an allegory of the Russian Revolution in 1917 and the corruption of the Soviet Union. The characters in the novella are the animals which are remarkably characterized. George Orwell’s description was on point, as the reader can have an unclouded idea about how the characters look like. The prevailing theme in the book is how power can lead to absolute corruption. Power can be considered as fear, corruption as well as influence.

The author exhibited numerous examples to display how fear is used throughout all the story to establish power. Power changed Napoleon completely as he was expelling anyone that hamper his way so he turned to be an evil ruler, also his character changed and he was treating the animals in a bad way; Napoleon represent real life rulers. In the novella, Napoleon followed many methods of propaganda to gain power and control the farm. From the very start Napoleon had been a noticeable leader among the pigs simply because he was renowned for getting things his own. For instance, he decided to educate the nine puppies not for their own good, but for his as he used them as a military force to make other animals fear him and to secure his power and it becomes routine for the dogs to be seen in public with Napoleon to reinforce his power through violence.

However, Napoleon gained love and support from other animals “Napoleon is always right”(Orwell 19) which was always said by Boxer the horse. Snowball, another pig shared the position of being leadership with Napoleon and he was posing a great threat to Napoleon. Snowball was a good speaker and he reached the animals minds easily; consequently, Napoleon was trying to put down Snowball’s ideas in order not to gain support.

Finally, Napoleon gained extreme power through exiling Snowball out of the farm. Without having Snowball around, Napoleon became the acknowledged leader and he ordered the animals to follow certain rules which made them powerless in any decisions made on the farm. By that Napoleon would be running the farm without having any objections about what he is doing. Having such power changed Napoleon completely as he rarely appeared in public; in order, to show that he had more crucial matters than the animals. He also premeditated to eliminate any animal who is a likely threat to his position. The hens were wanting to rebel against him so he decided to kill them to make them a paradigm for any animal thinking of disobeying him . Moreover, he discriminated between the animals.

For instance, the pigs took the milk and apples saying that they are good for their well-being as they are the working brains in the farm “Comrades!’ said Squealer ‘You do not imagine, I hope, that we pigs are doing this in a spirit of selfishness and privilege? Many of us actually dislike milk and apples. I dislike them myself. Our sole object in taking these things is to preserve our health. Milk and apples contain substances absolutely necessary to the well-being of a pig. We pigs are brainworkers. The whole management and organization of this farm depend on us. Day and night we are watching over your welfare. It is for your sake that we drink the milk and eat those apples.

” (Orwell 13) and he considered the sheep and chickens stupid. Furthermore, the pigs started to take more privileges as they lived in the farmhouse saying that they need to work in a quiet place, drink alcohol; in addition they learned how to wear clothes and to walk on two legs like humans “Twelve voices were shouting in anger, and they were all alike. No question, now, what had happened to the faces of the pigs. The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.”(Orwell 44). They changed the seven commandments placed by old major to be merely five. For example, the commandment which was placed by old major was that “All ANIMALS ARE EQUAL” (Orwell 10), but then Napoleon changed it to “ALL ANIMALS ARE EQUAL, BUT SOME ARE MORE EQUAL THAN OTHERS” (Orwell 42).

This power made Napoleon so foolish as he sold Boxer to get enough money to buy drinks, he convinced the other animals that they are taking Boxer to the hospital to recover from his accident. Napoleon modeled on the Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin. Stalin was raised in a peasant society and then transformed into an industrial and military superpower. After Bolshevik leader Vladimir Lenin death, Stalin defeated his competitor for control of the Communist Party.

He started by placing a five-year plan convincing the people that the Soviet Union will be altered from a bumpkin society to a manufacturing superpower. However, he ruled with terror and millions of his citizens died during his reign. His plan was that the government will control the economy including the farms. The farmers who dismissed to collaborate they were either shot or exiled.

Stalin was exterminating anyone opposing his opinions. Cities were named by his name for his honor. He was the reason for the death of 20 million person. Another clear example is El-Sisi, the Egyptian president, he began his reign by convincing the citizens that Egypt will become a developed city within the next few years but nothing happened. Additionally, he developed laws that prohibit any other candidate to be involved in the Presidential elections to be the only candidate.

Every individual on the earth wishes to enjoy the right of being free. Neither Napoleon, Stalin nor El-Sisi allowed their people to live freely without feeling restricted and tied. When the person turns to be a leader everything he promised to do is forgotten. His aim by this plan is only to gain the love of the people. Animal Farm is one of the few stories that shows how a person can do anything to experience power.

It is true that power and position matter and may lead a person to do anything and to become evil; in order to, retain his position. Napoleon used cunning and other tools to gain and maintain power. The people altitude changes when they become leaders.

If the person does not have the foundations of good morals, he will abuse the use of the power and will cause harm for million of innocent people.
