In the opening paragraph of the letter, the reader can assume that the tone was gracious and ironic. It is ironic because he is being respectful to the clergymen who attack him verbally in a public statement. Also, he is writing to him from a jail cell. Most of the time, a person will react in a destructive manner in that type of situation, but not Martin Luther King.

   2. Paragraphs 2-4 are arranged in a prefer order because he wanted the reader to understand who he was, why he is doing this, and most importantly, to introduced himself to the world before people judge him. Reserving the order of the paragraph will make Martin Luther King seem as a unreliable person to listen to.  He will lose the ability to appeal to ethos.     3. The allusions to biblical figures  and events appeal to ethos and pathos by demonstrating to the reader that he has authority because he is Christian and knows what he is talking about. By appealing to ethos, he explains the authority of St. Thomas Aquinas(just and unjust laws) and Paul Tillich(separation=discrimination).

He shows that they had a big impact on Christians. By appealing to pathos, he shows sympathy to the three guys who were crucified. He feels sorrow towards the church and feels they are disappointing God.     4.The reason why the basic principles and process of the nonviolent protest movement was explain in such detail because he wanted to show his audience his perspective on his nonviolent approach. By appealing to ethos, he explains the reasons why for the nonviolent approach and why protest are seen as a violent way to fix things.

He wanted people to fight for what they believe  is right in a well-mannered way. He emphasized that he will not revoke a violent outrage to get what he wants.     5.The effect of juxtaposing the second  sentence in paragraph 14 is to show how other cultures-like Asian and African- are moving past their differences when it comes to equality. While in America, it is a long, everlasting problem where people are still stuck with the idea that African Americans are still seen as property and not citizens of the United States of America.     6.

In the long sentence in paragraph 14, he arranged the “when” clauses in the order that he does because he wanted to demonstrates the times when African American has experienced discrimination. Going from universal experiences, (black people suffering from poverty), to personal experiences, ( being discriminated by people because of their skin color). It show the suffering that black people had to go through, but they had enough of it so they will fight for their rights.     7. Four rhetorical strategies used in paragraph 25 is a rhetorical question, (“But is this a logical assertion”), Anaphora, (“Isn’t this like”), Antithesis , (“Society must protect and robbed and punish the robber”), and allusions, (“condemning Socrates”).     8.

The five chief rhetorical strategies used in paragraph 31 is anaphora, (“Was not…”), rhetorical question, (“Will we be extremists for hate or for love”), allusions/ethos, (“Love your enemies….”), Imagery, (“In that dramatic sense…three men were crucified”), and logos in the first sentence of the paragraph.    9. Paragraph 45 starts to talk about the actions of the Birmingham police in “preventing police” because if he stated his opinions about the cops in the beginning of the letter, the clergymen would have ignored his ideas and beliefs about why he acting like this.

He needed to establish his appeal to ethos first before telling them the main reason for the injustice in Birmingham.    10. When it comes to patterns in figurative language in the letter, there’s a pattern in darkness and lightness. In paragraph 22, King emphasized that what Hitler did in WWII was “legal” and those who went against him was “illegal”. He emphasised that he would helped the Jews fight this war.

That is a demonstration of darkness and lightness.     11. In paragraph 14, we see the repetition of the word “when” several times.  By using when, it gives an emotional punch to African Americans who have experienced the things that was said in paragraph 14. As he keeps stating  situations of discrimination, it gets darker and worse.

He want people to feel sympathy towards them.    12.  The final three paragraphs of King’s conclusion are rhetorically effective because he appeal to pathos when he shows faith and respect towards the clergymen. He could have ended the letter in a not so kind manner, but he is a believer of God and let them know that they are all equal. He has faith that the clergymen will join these nonviolent movements and help them get equal rights.
