IntroductionMore organizations are virtualizing desktops than ever before. According to Gartner, the hosted virtual desktop market could hit 76 million users by 2016. IDC agrees, predicting the on-premise and hosted Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) market could reach $1.3 billion in the next three years.
What is driving this growth? The enlarged security of getting data off the edge. The anywhere any device access and BYOD trend that improves user mobility (and is resulting in employees working more!). The longer lifespans and lower energy footprint of zero clients compared to PCs. The potential for simpler desktop management and massive operational cost savings. With so many clear benefits, why are many VDI projects stuck in the early stages of deployment? Why are some being scrapped entirely and companies going back to refreshing their PCs? Literature ReviewAdministrators will need to learn the VDI software’s capabilities and limitations. Accommodating users who require unique applications or their own personalization settings can result in image proliferation, which can end up being more difficult to manage than operating separate workstations.
Install applications, patches, and drivers once, and every user relying on that image benefits from the update. Problems can generally be resolved from within the data center; there’s no need to run out to the actual PCs. Since images can usually be accessed from any connected workstation, a user experiencing hardware trouble on their usual PC can simply go to another workstation and access their data and applications. Server-side problems can affect multiple users–everyone using that server or that image. For that reason, it’s a good idea to set up redundant servers as a failsafe. In VDI deployments, latency and available capacity have a direct impact on the perceived quality of a user experience, so the network infrastructure must be able to deliver solid switching performance along with transactional insight to the underlying structure itself. In regarding resiliency VDI: Because multiple desktops are centrally hosted on fewer physical servers, a failure will affect many, or all, desktops.
The best vendors provide VDI services for 2018 according to IT Central Station are VMware Workstation, Microsoft Remote Desktop Services, and XenDesktop. Now there are a lot of companies use VDI for the work, such as Startups and growth businesses New and growing businesses need to use their cash for developing products and expanding their companies, not for buying IT infrastructure. With DaaS, they can use a cloud-based solution for the back office in the same way they use other cloud platforms for specific key operations. Another type of businesses use in Property management companies with properties to manage all over a city, state or country, and with contracts that regularly come and go, management companies have a strong need to stay nimble when it comes to computing. Lastly, Large law firms and accounting firms, large firms typically use business-centric apps that work exactly the way they want them to but are not cloud-ready. These firms also tend to have a fair amount of turnover because of their size. So, it makes sense for them to run their apps on secure servers that are scrupulously managed and use investment-free VDI for their desktop needs.
Discussion/ConclusionFinally, it is evident that Virtualization Desktop Infrastructure technologies have emerged over the many years into the systems we use today. Especially, it has been observed that desktop virtualization offers many benefits to an organization which makes all data lives in the data center, not on the endpoint, there are significant security benefits of VDI, such as, a thief who steals a laptop that uses VDI can’t take any data off the machine, because there is no data on the machine. VDI also has its drawbacks. The cost savings associated with endpoint hardware can disappear quickly, however, after factoring in IT infrastructure expenses. Storage in particular can make VDI cost prohibitive. When a desktop runs locally, the operating system, applications, data and settings are all stored on the endpoint. There is no extra storage cost; it’s included in the price of the PC.
With persistent VDI, however, the OS, applications, data and settings for every single user must be stored in the data center. Capacity needs, and the cost required to meet them, can quickly balloon out of control. VDI’s reliance on network connectivity presents another challenge. Users can’t access their virtual desktops without a network connection, and weak connectivity can hinder desktop performance. It is therefore important that organizations understand their goals and objectives before deciding the technology to implement either as a way of cost reduction, to make system administration easier, to achieve user flexibility or to follow trends and keep up with the competition.
